QUICK  FACTS
  • The Department of Education oversees the K’Awasis Day Care, the Post Secondary Program and the Cowessess Community Education Center (CCEC) 
  • 196 students enrolled in CCEC (PreK to Grade 12); 12 eligible  graduates this year
  • 105 post-secondary students (full & part time)
  • Approximately 40 Cowessess post-secondary graduates in 2020
  • K’Awasis Day Care was at full capacity in March of 2020 (23 children) prior to shut down
CURRENT INITIATIVES
  • Six Community Engagement sessions held in March, June and September 2019 in the community (Overview Document to be posted for membership)

  • Since October of 2019, an education consultant (Cowessess member) has been updating CCEC policy and working towards writing a Cowessess Education Act. A Policy Focus Group was established in February and the focus group has been reviewing draft policy since March 17, 2020 and meets on Zoom every two weeks during the pandemic.

  • The work includes decolonization, Indigenization and community feedback to guide the process of developing an Education Council/Board, etc. Literacy Plan – in development for Head Start, Day Care and CCEC to build capacity for early literacy development

WORKING TOWARDS
  • Upon closing for COVID-19, the need for online teaching platforms was evident. All educators created a Google classroom to connect with families during closure. Microsoft Teams was utilized for communication.

  • Chromebooks purchased for Grades 9-12 and Ipads for younger students.

  • CCEC is actively planning for teaching options for the fall.
